Better iPhone Notifications – Where are you?

Apple can be slow to release, what I would call obvious requirements for it’s iPhone. Take ‘cut and paste’ for example,  and what a wait we had! Have you ever seen anyone so excited when Apple finally introduced cut and paste?

Regarding notifications we do have pop up notifications, sound alerts and badge numbers on apps, but there has to be a friendly way of alerting you to messages other than a popup window. If you get more than one kind of alert popup it knocks off the previous one, so if you are a busy person, you cannot see at a glance what has happened, what is new since the last time you checked your phone, without going into individual applications, this is where a non-intrusive notification system and summary screen could help you.

Of course you can turn off those popup alerts and just use the number badge, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a notification. This along with some sort of summary screen, which will let you know at a glance what is happening with your email, calls, SMS and so on. You really would think we would have this by now!

Having spend a few hours with a Palm Pre I have to say they seem to have the idea right, a notification needs to alert you to its presence without disrupting your current activity. Indeed internet reports claim Apple have hired a former WebOS notification designer, so we may see friendlier alerts sooner than we think.

The man who “Invented the non-intrusive banner notification system used in webOS” and also did all sorts of other work for the OS, Rich Dellinger, is leaving Palm to return to his earlier employer, Apple, as a Senior User Interface Designer. (PreCentral)
