I got this e-mail from a friend!

How do I edit my own picture so it is formatted to the correct size to be used as a wallpaper  on my iPhone 4?

I wanted to tell him to use Google, but instead I decided to write this quick blog post. Let’s see first what Apple has to say about the iPhone 4 screen to get an overview:

  • Retina display
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
  • 800:1 contrast ratio (typical)
  • 500 cd/m2 max brightness (typical)

The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3Gs have completely different pixel resolution. The  iPhone 3GS has a resolution  of 480×320 pixel and iPhone 4 has a pixel resolution of 960×640.  The answer is to  use your favorite software  to crop your image to 640 X 960 and you should get a reasonable enough looking custom wallpaper!

If you are looking for a free editing tool give Gimp  (windows) a try. I edited the above promotion picture for the TV show The Big Bang Theory to the correct size as an example – for the iPhone 4. Try it on your iPhone and let me know what you think!

The iPhone has been a huge hit in Ireland since it’s initial exclusive launch on O2, of course it is now available also on 3 Mobile and Vodafone. Joining them shortly is Eircom’s two mobile phone networks Meteor and E-Mobile. Both will have the iPhone 4 shortly – according to their websites.

You can register your interest on Meteor here, and e-mobile here. No word on price plans and hardware charges yet, but we can hope they will shake up the other networks and offer a real alternative in Ireland

There are countless iPhone case manufactures online offering a variety of different cover designs, but when zazzle offered us the opportunity to select our own design, we jumped at the chance. Zazzle offer a variety of items which you can customize with your own images from T-shirts, mugs, to of course iPhone covers. Using a simple online interface you can add your own picture… of, well lets say a loved one, but if you are like us you can choose a landscape.

Before we get to the image we selected for our cover, lets look at the all important form of this iPhone case. While the ability to customize the back cover of your iPhone case, is of course a nifty feature that is bound to start of few conversations with friends, such as “where did you get that” and so on, you really need to be able to protect your iPhone and it still needs to be comfortable in your hands!

Zazzle were kind enough to send  the us our customized iPhone 4 cover just in time for the Christmas holidays, and having used it over a week, we found it is very comfortable indeed, and got a few compliments. Unlike many cases on the market the zazzle iPhone cover comes in two parts!  We found it straight forward to put on, but be very carefully if you need to take it off, we get the feeling it may break if not done correctly!

The side part of the case which covers the bezel has a soft touch feel, which makes gripping the iPhone comfortable. Looking at the iPhone 4 from the front you will notice a raised border over your iPhone, which does make the phone look slightly bigger.

The cover has the correct openings, of course,  for the speakers, buttons and at the back areas for the flash and camera (iPhone 4). These are well seated on the case, which is solid and does not move about as you use the phone, which is great, based on previous iPhone covers we have used.

Deciding what picture to place on the back design of the iPhone required some thought. As we have had a large amount of snow in Ireland lately, we decided a nice picture of St, Stephens Green, in Dublin, covered completely in snow, would look great on the iPhone and would be a challenge for the folks at zazzle to create. To make it more interesting we snapped the picture with the iPhone 4. Of course we also could not resist popping on our blog logo, and URL, nothing wrong with a bit of shameless self promotion right?

Overall we were very pleased with the custom zazzle iPhone case, but were surprised with the way the back of the case felt, it has what we can describe as a raised durable feel, not rough but not smooth either to the touch. While this itself was unexpected, we can see this makes your custom picture resistant to the elements while you are on the go with your iPhone.

Which network did you select for your iPhone 4? -  is a conversion right now in our forums. Three mobile  had some great price plans,  did you select O2, or Vodafone?

Why did you select that network.? We had another poll before the iPhone 4 was released, but it will be interesting to see what people in Ireland selected in the end!

iPhone 4

iPhone 4 is set to be released in Ireland this Friday. If you follow this blog at all you know this by now. But what makes this exciting news, that is, apart from the iPhone itself, is what will the mobile networks charge for this magical device, and how will they manage it’s launch? At the moment, and only days away from launch, there is no word on the subsidised cost just yet or on stock availability.

Apple say: Phone 4 will be available without a contract for a suggested retail price of €599 inc VAT (€495.04 ex VAT) for the 16GB model and €699 inc VAT (€577.69 ex VAT) for the 32GB model through Apple’s online store (store.apple.com/ie), and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

It is of course possible that the three mobile phone operators (Three, O2, Vodafone) are all waiting for each other to announce a price, and then undercut each other.

How will the networks handle the upgrades? I am sure many iPhone fans out there are still in contract with their iPhone 3Gs and also not yet entitled to an upgrade? And what about stock, last years stock levels were disappointing for early adopters, also know fondly as ‘Apple fanboys’.

Will those not eligible for an upgrade on their mobile phone account be buying from Apple for the 600 euro price tag. Is the iPhone 4 worth 600 euro?  Will there be queues like the iPhone 3GS last year?
