How to delete/uninstall iPhone & iPad apps – iPhone 101 series

Delete?

Delete?

It’s possible to remove applications once you no longer need it from either your iPhone or iPad. This is very simple to do, and necessary if you are a iPhone app download junkie. It is also particularly useful if you don’t use folders. Removing them is very easy, thank’s to Apple’s way of thinking!

  • Hold your finger over the application you wish to remove until it starts to ‘giggle’ you will see a small ‘X’ to the left of the icon tap it you will then see this message: “Deleting this application will also delete it’s data”
  • Select ‘delete’ to remove the application from your device. It really is that simple, remember if you remove an application from your iPhone or iPad you are also deleting the associated data, as per the above alert. It’s always a good idea to sync apps you have bought first with iTunes, but of course you can always re-download them for free once you have bought them!
  • Note: If your are in the process of downloading a large application such as a graphics intensive game, which you no longer want, and it  is not finished downloading, you can use the same above process to cancel the download/install!

You might ask a particular application  not to alert you, only to change your mind at some point! How do you reactivate those notifications again? It’s actually very simple, you don’t need to open the app itself, as notifications has it’s own management area in the settings app.

How to end a multitasking app – iPhone 101 series

Multitasking was introduced with iOS4 for the iPhone and is extremely useful. It means you can listen to your favourite audio app, while sending an e-mail, sending a tweet, or checking up on your facebook contacts, all while reading an ebook.

And if you do all of the above at once you will notice those apps continue to run when you switch out of them. Fast app switching support along with multitasking means the iPhone can now be considered a possibility for business who may previously have dismissed the device.

What happens when you are finished using the app, and no longer wish to use it or have it running in the background? How you close the app? Why would you want to in the first place? You may want to stop a radio app from playing for example!

It’s not very obvious how to remove an app from the multitasking pane for a new iPhone owner, but it is easy enough to do.

How to disable data roaming – iPhone 101 series

    Turn off data roaming

    Turn off data roaming

Data roaming prices can be astronomical! When you are on holidays or taking a business trip, you will want to be fully aware of data roaming prices and check out what plans, if any, are available.

For example I was data roaming in England recently as a customer of O2 Ireland who had a charge of 4.96 per MB and you will be charged for what you use up to 4MB and then up to 50MB is free, believe it or not this is actually not a bad offer, but you could be looking at 20 Euro per day and up, depending on use.

You may want to disable data roaming on your iPhone. Disabling data roaming will prevent your iPhone from establishing a data connection when you are out of the country. This is very simple to do.  You can set this at any time – even before you leave for your trip, and it is usually enabled by default, but be sure to double check this.

Oh! You are probably wondering about wifi, disabling data roaming has no effect on wifi you can use this as normal.

    How to do it

    1. Open the settings app.
    2. Select General and then Network.

      Network

    3. Under the network option, set data roaming to off. You can see under this option the explanation “turn data roaming off when abroad to avoid substantial when using email, mms, web browsing and other data services”
    4. Data roaming

      Data roaming

Remember if you need to use data services urgently you can enable it, but if you do remember that iPhones often use data services in the background, so even if you are not browsing the internet you could still be charged, for example, your iPhone may be checking for email updates, so don’t forgot to disable data roaming once you are finished.
