Sky Go brings hope to ‘proper telly’ streaming for iPad and iPhone

SKY GO
SKY GO

Some exciting news for SKY television customers in Ireland and the UK from July 6 th . Sky announced that they will be scrapping their old SKY Mobile TV app and Sky Player service in favour of a service called SKY Go, which will consolidate the two services and mirror  SKY customers’ subscription. This means no more paying extra for SKY Sports if you already have the channels. Sadly iOS devices will be limited to five Sky Sports channels, ESPN and Sky News, but SKY say further channels to be added over time.

It’s better news for your Mac or PC  “customers will be able to access more than 30 live channels, including all five Sky Sports channels, Sky Movies, Sky News, Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, MTV, Disney, G.O.LD, Nickelodeon, NatGeo, History, Eden and ESPN, supported by an extensive library of on-demand content.”

You must already have a subscription to the above channels in order to watch them of course, but if you don’t. Sky Go will be available from August to non-Sky TV customers, with monthly subscriptions priced from £15-£40.

Still waiting on RTE Player here!

Stephen van Rooyen, Deputy MD of Sky’s Customer Group, comments :

“The explosion of smartphones and tablets demonstrates the increasing consumer demand for accessing entertainment and communicating on the move. We have already responded to this by offering a range of services, including live TV, across many new innovative platforms and devices, like laptops and iPhones.

“Clearly the consumer appetite is there, and it’s growing. In responding to that, and to create even more value, choice and flexibility for our customers, we are now going to offer online and mobile access to Sky content at no extra charge. The future support of a nationwide Wi-Fi network will help us supercharge that experience further still.”

iOS 4.3 now available to developers

iOS 4.3
iOS 4.3

Apple have made the next version of iOS, iOS 4.3 available to developers. iOS 4.3 is available to iPad, iPhone 4, 3Gs, iPod Touch, and there is even an Apple TV version! This is further proof that Apple is trying to keep iOS versions consistent throughout their iOS devices. It may also mean support for iPhone 3G will no longer be offered?

Developers are still sifting through the code to see what is new in iOS 4.3.  One of the  most interesting elements to iOS 4.3 that Apple have introduced is new multitouch features for iPad –

“You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps.”

This would negate the need for a home button! Will there be a home button on the iPad 2?

Other findings in iOS 4.3 so far also include:

  • Ability to stream video from apps other that native Apple apps!
  • A new facetime icon.
  • Personal hotspot options – this is expected to be carrier dependent, as we reported on recently.
  • Change the functionality of the hardware button on the iPad: Mute or Rotation lock – it’s now your choice!

Apple TV App
Apple TV App

We still can’t understand why Apple TV did not get any apps from the getgo, every other Apple  device seems be getting apps these days- now  including the Mac. Apple TV just got it’s first jailbreak app today. A weather app to be exact, as in the above screenshot, engadget notes the simple weather app, designed by a tiny software firm called nitoTV.

It looks like developers will have a lot of fun with designing apps for Jailbreak broken Apple TVs

WordPress for iPad and iPhone Updated (iOS) – Hello video!

Wordpress for iOS
Wordpress for iOS

Automattic, the folks  behind wordpress blogging platform have updated their iPhone and iPad app, which allows you to manage many features of your wordpress powered blog from your iOS powered device.

With this update the ability to upload video is introduced, you can now upload video directly to your website using the app. “With 2.6 you can now record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app”.

The developers also re wrote some code to manage the way local drafts are managed. Autosave and post revisions are also now available in the app.  The developers are also turning their focus to media management “What would a new video feature be without a new Media Library to go along with it? We’ve taken the old Photos tab and turned it into a new Media Library more along the lines of what you’re used to with WordPress.”

  • Video. Record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app. Yay for being able to catch your friends’ and co-workers’ most embarrassing shenanigans creative moments with iPhone video and publish them immediately for all the world to see on your WordPress site.
  • A total rewrite of the way local drafts are handled, to prevent the unintentional loss of your pending posts.
  • Autosave/post revisions. Bam! One of the “oh, thank goodness” features of the web app makes it into the iOS version.
  • Easier setup. Faster and easier process for adding your sites to the app.
  • Media Library. We’re gradually getting closer to the media management you’re used to in the web app.

Check out the iOS wordpress blog for a full breakdown of the deveopment and features of this application for iOS.

PC  Mag have an interesting video review on the new Apple TV, as reported by Mac Rumours. It demonstrates some of the abilities of Steve Job’s “hobby”, except the ability to stream from your PC, which I personally find the most interesting. It is expected that Apple TV will be in consumers hands in the next few days, with Apple having dispatched the first batch of Apple  TV devices to those who ordered it on first availability.
