Meteor 3G?
3G has a long way to go – when it comes to proving its worth. Vodafone was the first to offer 3G services, now including mobile television, but are consumers convinced? Well apparently not, but maybe in time they will be… Finally it looks like Irelands last 3G licence has been sold to Eircom, whom we are told will use it for its Meteor mobile network. Irish Daily Mail reports today:
EIRCOM announced yesterday that it would finally take the plunge into the world of 3G.It has decided to buy the country’s last 3G mobile licence for its fast growing Meteor unit.
The licence comes with a price tag of EUR114m and had initially been offered to troubled Smart Telecom.
3G, the third generation of wireless technology, has enhanced video and voice capabilities and led to better roaming, among other innovations.

Three Mobile goes down
It seems to have gone un-noticed really, possible because three mobile has very few customers in Ireland. But, being one of their customers (currently), I had no coverage until late last night. Needless to say three did not apologise to its customers by way of a text or even a few bob credit. However, I suppose it does demonstrate how reliant I am on my mobile phone, especially since I could receive messages and calls, but not make them!
One good thing did come from this outage though. SKYPE, I called a few of my friends on their landline for 2cents per minute, which costs much more on a mobile depending on your network from 15c to 50c per minute! I think I may continue to use the service over my mobile phone for calls! Its like what they say when a window closes a door opens (…something like that)
In other news, I have launched a forum website called SilentCode.net – There is much work to do on this, and the database is from a site I ran previously, but the general idea, is to create a small community of people who like to discuss Technology, Entertainment and Humour.( If your interested in helping hit me with a message – or Skype/MSN me). I’ll have more on this soon, but the site is active for now, so check it out. I’m also working on some new sites with a few interested people, so let’s see where they go!

Three Mobile: The way to roam?
Three seems to be making headway with abolishing roaming charges for Irish roaming customers. Hearld AM reports
Under the terms of the scheme, Three customers visiting Britain Italy, Austria, Australia, Hong Kong, Sweden and Denmark will no longer be charged for receiving calls and texts. Customers can also use existing minutes, text and data bundles to make voice and video calls, send texts, picture and video messages, and even surf the internet.
Update:
This shocked me, Meteor is Irelands biggest network when did that happen, i though it was Vodafone? (source again Hearld AM):
Three has 14 million customers worldwide, but refuses to release numbers for its Irish operation, where it is believed to have fewer than 50,000 subscribers, compared with 750,000 for the next biggest network in Ireland, which is Meteor.
