Not so that people can avoid hitting the cars on that particular side! In other words if the sign is on the left then the baby is sitting in the backseat on the left side... Therefore, if you are about to have a collision with one of these cars, the sign is supposed to indicate to try and swerve a bit to only hit the right side of the car instead. It is just a tool to help a little baby avoid getting hit. I don't see why people think it is stupid to hang one in their car... or why others might want to take the precaution of doing so. It can only help the situation. I am sure that they would rather have their cars looking good (with no decals and cheesy stuff all over it) but sometimes you have to take other things into consideration.
