Taxation, Banking, Borrowing, Budgeting, Credit Cards – and erm… Gardening…?
I was browsing a popular forum on finance and money issues, I found it somewhat interesting to note that in the section which tells you how many people are looking at each section. The results are interesting. Shockingly, homes and gardens secton has 63 viewers. I though it would be a sign of the times as to what people were looking at.

Crafting A Plan B For this recession
Was listening to RTE Choice this morning which led me to a website – it is American focused but has some interesting notes to make with the recession in mind. The points are a little obvious to most, but re-read them when you are feeling gloomy. And as the second link below suggests – take a walk (not through the city centre – but in the country, and away from cliffs)
Some tips for dealing with financial stress:
- Don’t get caught up in the doom-and-gloom hype.
- Make a financial plan to reduce expenses and manage finances more efficiently.
- Recognize a spike in unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, drinking, gambling or emotional eating.
- Seek out healthier ways to deal with stress like talking a walk, having a family dinner or learning a new skill.
- Consult a financial planner or credit counsellor if you need help managing your finances.

Recession Savings: Mobile Phone Bill
The Mobile Phone Bill- I really would like to drop it in the river and keep walking.
So saving money can be a pain in the ass, I really don’t know how people save that load of money required for that deposit on a house, but at some stage they must learn how to do it. Making the tough call, is what we are told is needed to be done in order to save the economy in this recession, nobody wants this, but we are in the mist of no choice land.
I heard someone today say we must realise that the country is like a family, when there are cuts to be made we must all chip in. That, all sounds like boiled bollix, but on some level it has relevance. The cuts are affect our wages and maybe our jobs.
It may be possible for someone like me to make a tough call (yea loosing your bill phone is a tough call – really!) by grouping some expenses and lowering the amount of money we spend on them (rocket science really!). On this point I am going to focus on what I am saving by cutting back on my bill phone, and eventually moving to top-up service.
Bill phones are given an image of being cheaper than the usual topup service, so is it actually cheaper?
Do brown bears wipe their arses? I am in contract with O2 for another few months, but I have saved a scary amount of money by cutting back on the ‘extras’. There is no secret on saving money with a bill phone, if you choose to user a bill phone. It is very similar to loosing weight you need to PUT DOWN THE FORK.
Seriously though, be very careful of these ‘money saving’ text addons, internet addons, or before you know it you will have a hefty bill. Say NO to them and stick to your price plan. If unlike me and are not in contract and want to save money move to a top up service, and USE FREE WEBTEXTS!
For me I got rid of my Blackberry Bold, and cancelled the addon for it, I gave a way my heart – but I could see the dark clouds forming.
The Loss: What you will miss? Depends on your usage, but the possibility of making a call whenever you like (well unlimited until you get the bill in the post) is gone out the window, Go on – try to make a 10 minute call on top up and you will see your top-up go ‘bye-bye’… That’s the tough call!
How much can you actually save? You can check out this spend calculator who will select an operator (Irish) that best meets your spend. But what you save is down to you. As I said its all boiled bollix at the end of the day, and you have to stop calling in order to save.
Put the fork down!
