Mark Little, Presenter of RTE”s Prime Time and a former RTE Washington correspondent, will give a lecture on the future of News Media, to the IIEA’s Digital Future Group.  Mr Little recently announced his decision to take a year’s leave from RTE to set up his own global online news service. It is my belief that every time someone does a google search for Catholic Church in Ireland, the abuse report should be front and centre. The Church itself has worked long and hard to bury the atrocities they committed. (From Damien)

World of Warcraft

I love to play World of Warcraft* (World of Warcraft, often referred to as WoW, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

So when a friend of mine asked me to create a discussion forum for his guild – a guild is a  group of people who come together in a group to play the game. This guild is a gay friendly guild.I was more than happy to oblige with setting up this forum for them.

It seems however that everyone can play warcraft, except ‘the GAYS’. Having advertised the gay friendly guild in the game, the guild leader got the following e-mail from Blizzard Entertainment.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry, an actress who appeared in numerous “Star Trek” TV shows and movies, died Thursday of leukemia at her home in Bel-Air, Calif., her representative said.

At Roddenberry’s side were family friends and her only son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991.

Her romance with Roddenberry earned her the title “The First Lady of Star Trek.” A fixture in the “Star Trek” franchise, her roles included Nurse Christine Chapel in the original “Star Trek,” Lwaxana Troi in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every spin-off of the 1966 cult series. She recently reprised the voice role in the upcoming “Star Trek” film directed by J.J. Abrams.

In my clique (going to use that word more often) we have already had one friend loose a job, I suspect however that many companies are being proactive in letting allot of staff go. Everyone has been predicting this and that, a few things have been said and now companies are crapping themselves.

They sit in their board rooms and discuss ‘company X has let 150 staff go we better do the same’, ‘good idea’ says board member A, ‘but lets not affect our company bonus!’ ‘Don’t talk bull shite’ Bill says board member B, ‘of course not’,’ i’ve promised my wife new boobs this year!.’

Vodafone have announced that they are letting 150 staff go, due to a down turn in the profits per person (or some business phrase like that). If things are so bad, why did they recently buy a land-line company? Why did they expand into the home and broadband section, surely they need MORE and not less staff?

Ireland has pulled it’s self out of worse situations in the past, so lets try to enjoy the Christmas, and worry later. Lets put all this recession shiite under the bed. Suppose that’s easy to say if you have not yet been affected…

And kind of unrelated to recession banter, but I want to end on a different note for this post.

Denny – You know the pork company, who usually looks forward to Christmas sales, was worried for a while about the recent fiasco in the poke market, but we are safe now (apparently). I loved that they opened a stall (you know the type of ones you see on the street when you’ve been on a piss and fancy a munch) on Grafton street yesterday for hungry shoppers giving out free pork products. Genius! And I have to say there was a big queue, Irish people love their Oink Oinks!

Did anyone see the Luas redline in Dublin – it is now literally a light rail advert - currently featuring a  vodafone ad- looks awful to see an advert zipping around our city – or am I moaning again for no reason?

Strange title to this post I know but stay with me, have you ever noticed how some Irish websites only like it when you type in www instead of just the domain. For example typing in aib.ie you get the above site (not AIB’s website), but typing in www.aib.ie takes you to the actual AIB Bank website!

Does anyone know what causes this strange behaviour with websites, I remember also RTE had this problem but seems to be ok now. I also don’t like this happing for a bank, has someone else registered aib.ie?

Some people tend to look at the ground while they walk, some do it – avoiding peoples gaze, and others are lost in day dreams, a few fear dog doo on their shoe.

Well those people are now being targeted by advertisements written on the pavement, this seems like a new marketing strategy to sell a product – in this case involves Eircom writing in what I can only hope is semi permanent chalk, advertisements on the pavement all around St Stephens Green area, in frot of the park. Is it really the same as vandalism?

There are a few things I don’t understand about this, but I am surprised that this bill was passed so quickly, well maybe not when you consider this (from RTE News) “The Safe Act was passed in the House of Representatives by 409 votes to two. Law makers used a system designed to push legislation through quickly which meant that it did not receive a hearing, was not voted on in committee and was not put up for public review.”

The fines for failing to report illegal traffic is hefty with a maximum fine of up to 205,000 euro. This means of course that ISP’s will be activity monitoring all traffic on their networks, meaning the issue of a freedom of speech and such are invaded. Is this bill simply a way to allow legal monitoring of the public net activity?

Although, this bill will of course allow illegal activity related to these images, to capture the scum involved, but is this the only way? Anyway why only WiFi – is it easier to monitor WiFi?
