About my charity

Dublin SPCA

The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is Ireland’s largest, most progressive and innovative animal welfare organisation. Every year we rescue and rehabilitate thousands of sick and injured domestic animals and wildlife and place them in loving homes or return them to the wild.

We treat the animals that come into our care like our own family. We do all that we can to ensure a healthy and happy life for pets and wildlife. This philosophy is at the core of all that we do from medical treatment and rehabilitation to standing up for the rights of neglected and abused animals by lobbying for improved legislation and prosecution.

iOS 5 beta for iPhone 4

iOS 5 First look

iOS 5 First look

Thanks to a really great contact on Twitter I managed to grab the first beta of iOS 5. While much of the great and wonderful updates have been reported on already, I have been through the settings and jotted down some notes on what I found. Here are a few observations on iOS 5.

  • As promised by Steve Jobs, you no longer need a PC or Mac to activate or set up your iPhone. It’s now an independent device in its own right!
  • iCloud: You can use your iPhone while syncing it with iTunes and I assume the iCloud. An icon appears on the status bar indicating a sync is in progress. There is an option for “Storage Plan” which is currently grayed out, which indicates Apple may have various storage plans in addition to the Free 5GB. Steve Jobs made this sound like a lot, but when I ran my first iCLoud backup, I realised how little this is if you plan on backing up your camera roll!
Alert Style

Alert Style

  • Home Screen Notifications: You can slide notifications by swiping down at the top of the screen. You can delete all text and phone message notifications but not individual messages. The notifications screen also shows two widgets: stocks and weather. Weather uses GPS to display weather in your area. You can change from banner notifications to the usual pop up windows.
  • Lock Screen: Messages now appear on lock screen as banner notifications opposed to a single pop up message. The lock screen will only show notifications since you last locked it. You can access the camera from the lock screen. New e-mail messages do not seem to appear on the lock screen (disappointed in this).
  • Settings: There is some interesting things happening in the settings . Now an option to update software over the air! A new iTunes Sync option. iCloud options with the following On/Off toggle options: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Photo Stream, Find my iPhone. They were all disabled by default on my test device.
  • Sending an e-mail without a subject? You now get a warning!
  • iPod app has gone! I’m surprised Apple are removing this one, now there is an app for music and one called video, the same as an iPod Touch.
  • LED Flash for ALerts.  The camera flash will go off for alerts. Makes me suspect that Apple will have Blackberry like LED in the next iPhone device.
Twitter

Twitter

  • Twitter: Twitter is tightly integrated, you can authorise more than one account, if you use Twitter this is very handy.
  • Camera: Pinch to zoom, seems a bit buggy to me, but it is a first beta, there is also a grid, and best of all you can use the volume button to take  a snap.
  • Photos app: You can now edit photos, it’s pretty basic, but functional none the less. The ability to correct ‘red eye’, crop images and rotate images!

To summarise, lot’s of goodies in this iOS release, which we can expect in Autumn sometime, with possibly more that is available in the current beta. I have noticed throughout the iOS that much of the functionality comes from what was popular apps and jailbreak functions, Apple seems to be listening to its users.

iPad 2 LIVE EVENT

We are tweeting about the iPad 2 event. Our latest tweets are shown below, but we would appreciate if you would like to follow us also @iPadiPhoneBlog

iOS 4.3 now available to developers

iOS 4.3

iOS 4.3

Apple have made the next version of iOS, iOS 4.3 available to developers. iOS 4.3 is available to iPad, iPhone 4, 3Gs, iPod Touch, and there is even an Apple TV version! This is further proof that Apple is trying to keep iOS versions consistent throughout their iOS devices. It may also mean support for iPhone 3G will no longer be offered?

Developers are still sifting through the code to see what is new in iOS 4.3.  One of the  most interesting elements to iOS 4.3 that Apple have introduced is new multitouch features for iPad -

“You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps.”

This would negate the need for a home button! Will there be a home button on the iPad 2?

Other findings in iOS 4.3 so far also include:

  • Ability to stream video from apps other that native Apple apps!
  • A new facetime icon.
  • Personal hotspot options – this is expected to be carrier dependent, as we reported on recently.
  • Change the functionality of the hardware button on the iPad: Mute or Rotation lock – it’s now your choice!

‘Google Goggles’ gets an update (video)

We’re excited to take another step in our vision of connecting offline media to online media. The next time you’re flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine, try taking a picture of an ad with Goggles. Goggles will recognize print ad and return web search results about the product or brand. This new feature of Goggles is enabled for print ads appearing in major U.S. magazines and newspapers from August 2010 onwards.

TheJournal.ie for iPhone & iPad

Journal.ie

Journal.ie

Many news organisations worth their salt have either an iPhone or iPad app these days. Unfortunately however, many of them make the mistake of quickly throwing together a basic app with little thought for the GUI or end user. Luckily TheJournal.ie made a decision to produce a  quality, functional, elegant app to compliment their website. And the cherry on the top is… it’s free,- are you listening TV3?

Currently this app is free in the app store and… get this, ad free too!

Keeping the interface simple is key but lets not  confuse this with basic. The Journal.ie is anything but basic! To begin with it’s  iOS 4 friendly (multitasking compatible) the app opens on the “Latest Stories” page which is presented with a thumbnail  and title for the latest articles.  Tap an article to open and read it’s content each article is media rich with social network buttons, you can also comment on their articles live in the app.

Like the TheJournal.ie website you can also access their other publications within the app namely Business ETC, The Score and The Daily Edge. Located at the bottom of the Journal.ie app are some filtering buttons, to navigate to “Main Stories” and “Most Popular”.  The app will even show you active logins on social networks you have logged into using the app!

Using the iPhone camera, you can also snap some images to send to the Journal for possible publication.  If you are an iPhone user you will appreciate this elegance of this app, but if you are and iPad owner you will love the utilisation of the display this app makes.

9/10 – Well done TheJournal.ie!

Video

Video calling is here with Skype 3.0 for iPhone!

Skype 3.0 for iPhone is here, and with it comes video calling, it has arrived earlier than expected by the rumor websites, but this is a big one folks.  Hop into the app store and hit update if you already have Skype for iPhone installed.

The good news is video calling will work with iPhone 4, 3Gs and iPod Touch (4rd Generation), obviously the 3Gs does not have a front facing camera. It will also work with iPod Touch (3rd gen) and the iPad, but just one way video calls (receiving). You need to update to iOS 4 to avail of video calling, with this done you will also be able to call desktop Skype users over wifi and 3G!

If you have not been using the video calling feature on your iPhone or iPod, because the other person did not have facetime on their device, this is the perfect time to give it a try?

Let us know in the comments how you get on!

Custom iPhone case by Zazzle reviewed

Zazzle

Zazzle

There are countless iPhone case manufactures online offering a variety of different cover designs, but when zazzle offered us the opportunity to select our own design, we jumped at the chance. Zazzle offer a variety of items which you can customize with your own images from T-shirts, mugs, to of course iPhone covers. Using a simple online interface you can add your own picture… of, well lets say a loved one, but if you are like us you can choose a landscape.

The perfect iPhone accessory that lets your personality shine through!

Before we get to the image we selected for our cover, lets look at the all important form of this iPhone case. While the ability to customize the back cover of your iPhone case, is of course a nifty feature that is bound to start of few conversations with friends, such as “where did you get that” and so on, you really need to be able to protect your iPhone and it still needs to be comfortable in your hands!

Zazzle were kind enough to send  the us our customized iPhone 4 cover just in time for the Christmas holidays, and having used it over a week, we found it is very comfortable indeed, and got a few compliments. Unlike many cases on the market the zazzle iPhone cover comes in two parts!  We found it straight forward to put on, but be very carefully if you need to take it off, we get the feeling it may break if not done correctly!

The side part of the case which covers the bezel has a soft touch feel, which makes gripping the iPhone comfortable. Looking at the iPhone 4 from the front you will notice a raised border over your iPhone, which does make the phone look slightly bigger.

The cover has the correct openings, of course,  for the speakers, buttons and at the back areas for the flash and camera (iPhone 4). These are well seated on the case, which is solid and does not move about as you use the phone, which is great, based on previous iPhone covers we have used.

Deciding what picture to place on the back design of the iPhone required some thought. As we have had a large amount of snow in Ireland lately, we decided a nice picture of St, Stephens Green, in Dublin, covered completely in snow, would look great on the iPhone and would be a challenge for the folks at zazzle to create. To make it more interesting we snapped the picture with the iPhone 4. Of course we also could not resist popping on our blog logo, and URL, nothing wrong with a bit of shameless self promotion right?

Overall we were very pleased with the custom zazzle iPhone case, but were surprised with the way the back of the case felt, it has what we can describe as a raised durable feel, not rough but not smooth either to the touch. While this itself was unexpected, we can see this makes your custom picture resistant to the elements while you are on the go with your iPhone.

To make it clear we have included the image we used on the back, as well as the end result in a  gallery below.
